Free Crochet Pattern
Two 5 inch  Motifs

USA Format

Abbreviations
WS. Wrong Side
RS.  Right Side
sc.  Single Crochet
dc.  Double Crochet
rpt.  Repeat
sl st. Slip Stitch

Base of ch. Work in first stitch

Approx finished size: 5 inch square

Materials
Use up your scraps of Worsted Weight Yarn
4.50mm & 4.00mm crochet hooks

GAUGE - 5sc and 5 rows of sc measures approx 1 inch square

I have not put specific colours for each square, you can do them in your own colour choice, either in one colour or with a different shade for the border.

Square Motif 1 - With 4.50mm hook, ch24, change to 4.00mm hook,
work 2dc in 3rd ch from hook, * skip 2ch's, (1sc, 2dc) in next ch,
* rpt from * to * to last 3ch, skip 2ch's, 1sc in last ch.
Turn. (7 groups)

Motif 1 Pattern Row - ch2, 2dc in base of ch2, * skip 2dc,
(1sc, 2dc) in next sc, * rpt from * to * to last 2dc and ch2,
skip last 2dc, 1sc in top of ch2. Turn.

Repeat Pattern Row until 16 rows have been worked in all. Turn



Edging - ch1, 2sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 20st, 3sc in top of ch2, working
down the first side of square in row ends, work 20 more sc evenly along to corner, 3sc in corner, work 20sc evenly along cast on edge to next corner, 3sc in corner, working up the second side of square in row ends, work 20 more sc evenly along to corner, 1sc in base
of ch1, sl st to first sc. Turn.

Starting with ch1, 2sc in base of ch1, work two more rows in sc, working 3sc in corners
and sl st at the end of each row. Fasten off. (You can work these last 2 rows in a contrast color as I have, if you prefer)

Square Motif 2 - With 4.50mm hook, ch23, change to 4.00mm hook,
work 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each
ch to end. Turn.

Motif 2 Pattern Row - ch1, 1sc in base of ch1,
1sc in each sc to end. Turn.

Repeat Pattern Row until 22 rows have been worked in all. Turn.




Edging - ch1, 2sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 20sc, 3sc in last sc, working down the first side of square in row ends, work 20 more sc evenly along to corner, 3sc in corner, work 20sc evenly along cast on edge to next corner, 3sc in corner, working up the second side of square in row ends, work 20 more sc evenly along to corner, 1sc in base of ch1, sl st to fist sc. Starting with ch1, 2sc in base of ch1, work two more rows in sc, working 3sc in corners and sl st at the end of each row. Fasten off. (Again you can work these last 2 rows in a contrast color as I have, if you prefer)

Finishing - With 4.50mm hook, sl st squares together by working through centre loops
(one from each motif, see picture below) use motifs for various projects i.e. placemats, blankets etc. Sew in and tie off any loose ends.










Once you have made and sl st together as many squares as you need for your project,
join yarn to a corner and with 4.00mm hook work ch1, 2sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each sc around all four sides, working 3sc in corners, 1sc in base of ch1, sl st to first sc on
beginning of row. Turn.

Next Row - ch1, (2sc, ch2, 2sc) in base of ch1, * skip 2sc, (2sc, ch2, 2sc) in next sc,
* rpt from * to * to last 2sc, skip last 2sc, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Fasten off.
