Free Baby Crochet Pattern

Colourful Afghan Blanket

Abbreviations

WS.    Wrong Side

RS.     Right Side

ch.     Chain

dc.     Double Crochet

tr.       Treble Crochet

rpt.     Repeat

ss.      Slip Stitch

yrh.    Yarn round hook


3tr group. 3tr into same stitch


Finished size approx:-

33” long x 31” wide not including tassels


Materials

300 grams of King Cole big value baby DK in white (001)

100 grams of King Cole big value baby DK

in shades of Mint (M), Peach (P) Lilac (L) and Lemon (LM)

4.00mm hook & 5.00mm crochet hooks


TENSION - 3, 3tr groups & 3 complete patterns measures approx. 2” square (5cm x 5cm)

Commence Blanket

With WS facing, (W) and using 5.00mm hook make 154ch, change to 4.00mm hook,

1dc into 2nd ch from hook, * 3ch, miss 3ch, 1dc into next ch * rpt from * to * to end.

Turn. (39dc)

 

Next Row - 3ch, 1tr into base of 3ch, * 1dc into 3ch space, 3tr into dc, * rpt from * to * to

last ch space and dc, 1dc into ch space, 2tr into last dc. Turn. (37, 3tr groups + 2 halves)

 

Row 1 - With (M) make 1ch, 1dc into base of ch, * 3ch, 1dc into centre tr of 3tr group*,

rpt from * to * to last tr and 3ch, make 3ch, 1dc into 3rd of 3ch. Turn.

 

Row 2 - 3ch, 1tr into base of 3ch, * 1dc into 3ch space, 3tr into dc, * rpt from * to * to last

ch space and dc, 1dc into ch space, 2tr into last dc. Turn.


The last 2 rows form the pattern, continue in pattern working 2 complete patterns in (W) between each of the contrast colours until 51 complete patterns have been worked in all

or work measures approximately 32” from beginning, finishing with a (W) pattern.

(see colour sequence below) Turn. Work Row 1 once. Turn.


W,  M,  W,  W,  P,  W,  W,  L,  W,  W,  LM,  W


Afghan Edging

Working around all 4 sides of blanket and ss to first stitch at the end of each row.

 

Next Row - With RS facing, (W) and 4.00mm hook make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work 2dc into each ch space, 1dc into each dc to last dc, 3dc into last dc, 1dc into each row

end along side of blanket, (52dc) 3dc into corner, work 2dc into each ch space and 1dc

into each dc along bottom of blanket, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each row end along side

of blanket, (52dc) 2dc into corner ss to first dc. Turn.

 

Next Row - Working 3dc into each corner as you go, make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch,

1dc into each dc all around blanket, ss to first dc. Rpt last row once.

 

Next Row - With (M) make 1ch, ss into base of 1ch, * 1tr into next dc, ss into next dc,*

rpt from * to * all around blanket, ss to 1ch at beginning of row. Turn. Fasten off.

 

Next Row - With (W) make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr and ss all around blanket working 3dc into corner. Turn.

 

Next Row - 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc all around blanket working 3dc

into each corner, ss to first dc. Fasten off.

 

Finishing - Sew in and tie off any loose ends of yarn.

 

Tassels

Using the same colour sequence as in the blanket, cut 3 lengths of yarn approx 6” long

(if you prefer a longer or a thicker tassel just add more length and more strips), starting

from a corner attach tassels to both ends of afghan (top & bottom) and place them in

every alternative dc. Trim tassels so they are even.
