Materials
1 x 100 grm balls of Baby DK Yarn
5.00mm, 4.00mm & 3.50mm crochet hooks
With 5.00mm hook, make 70ch, change to 4.00mm hook, 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, * 1dc into each ch to end. Turn. (69dc)
First Row - 1ch, ss into base of 1ch, 1tr into next dc, * 1ss into next dc, 1tr into next dc, * rpt from * to * to end, working a ss into last dc. Turn.
Second Row – 1ch, 1dc into each tr and ss to end. Turn.
Rpt last 2 rows until 20 rows in all have been worked, finishing on a first row. Fasten Off. Sew up side seam.
Earflaps X 2 With RS facing and working from seam miss 13 stitches, rejoin yarn to 14th stitch with ss, 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into next 7 stitches. Turn. Continue on these stitches for a further 4 rows. Turn.
Dec 1dc (see abbrev above) each end of row on next 3 rows, until 2dc remain. Turn. Ss 2dc together to make a point. Fasten off. Miss 27 stitches and rpt same as for first earflap.
Starting at back seam, and with RS facing, work 2 rows in dc evenly all around helmet including earflaps, working 3dc into points and turning at the end of each row. Fasten off.
Finishing - Sew in and tie off any loose ends, gather top edge by threading yarn through alternate dc’s. With 4.00mm hook and using yarn double thickness, make 50ch twice for ties. Fasten off.
Tie endings X 2 - With 3.50mm hook, make 4ch, ss to form a ring, 1ch, work 12dc into ring. Ss to first dc, 1ch, work 1dc into each dc to end. Ss to first dc. Fasten off leaving a length of yarn to gather into a bobble and attach them to ties.
Make pompom
Cut two circles of card about 2-3” across. Cut a small hole in the centre of each circle and place the circles together, thread yarn round and round the circle, making sure that the yarn is evenly distributed around the centre hole. Continue until the hole is full. Use sharp pointed scissors to snip the yarn between the two card circles, wind yarn around middle of two pieces of card and secure, leave length of yarn to sew with. Remove card and trim the pompom to the required size and attach to Crown on hat.
