Children’s Mittens

Abbreviations


WS.       Wrong Side

RS.        Right Side

(leaving last loop of each dc on hook,

yrh and pull through all loops)


Base of ch. Work into first stitch


Size to fit approx:-  2-3 years

Use larger hooks to make bigger mittens


Materials

50 grams of King Cole big value baby DK

5.50mm & 4.50mm Crochet Hooks


TENSION - 5dc & 5 rows of dc measures approx 1 Inch square

Mittens x 2 (Starting with cuff) - Using 5.50mm hook make 17ch, change to 4.50mm

hook, work 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1dc into each ch to end. Turn. (16dc)


Next Row - Working into back loop of stitch only, make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc

into each dc to end. Turn. Rpt last row 18 more times, making 20 rows in all.


Fold in half, (bottom to top) ss both sides together to make a round. Do not fasten off.


Lower Body of Mitt


First round - Working into row ends along top of cuff, make 1ch, 1dc into each row end around, ss to first dc. Turn. (20dc)


Second Round - Working through both loops from now on 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch,

1dc into each dc to end, ss to first dc. Turn.


Third Round - (Inc row) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 8dc, 2dc into

next dc, 1dc into each of next 9dc, 2dc into next dc, ss to first dc. Turn. (22dc)


Fourth Round - (Inc row) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 9dc, 2dc into

next dc, 1dc into each of next 10dc, 2dc into next dc, ss to first dc. Turn. (24dc)


Fifth Round - (Inc row) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 10dc, 2dc into

next dc, 1dc into each of next 11dc, 2dc into next dc, ss to first dc. Turn. (26dc)


Next Row - Make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end. Turn. Rpt last round once. Turn.


Space for Thumb - 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 21dc, make 4ch,

miss last 4dc, ss to first dc. Turn.


Upper Body of Mitt

Ninth Round - 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 4ch, 1dc into each of

next 21dc, ss to first dc. Turn. (26dc)


Tenth to Sixteenth Round  - Make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end. Turn.


Seventeenth Round - (Dec row) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 10dc,

dec 1dc over next 2dc, (see abbrev) 1dc into each of next 11dc, dec 1dc over next 2dc,

ss to first dc. Turn. (24dc)


Eighteenth Round - (Dec row) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 9dc, dec

1dc over next 2dc, 1dc into each of next 10dc, dec 1dc over next 2dc, ss to first dc. Turn. (22dc)


Nineteenth Round - (Dec row) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 8dc, dec

1dc over next 2dc, 1dc into each of next 9dc, dec 1dc over next 2dc, ss to first dc. Turn. (20dc)


Twentieth Round - (Dec row) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 7dc, dec

1dc over next 2dc, 1dc into each of next 8dc, dec 1dc over next 2dc, ss to first dc. Turn. (18dc)


Twenty First Round - (Dec row) 1ch, * dec 1dc over next 2dc, * rpt from * to * to end, ss

to first dc. Fasten off leaving length of yarn to gather top. (9dc)


Make Thumb - With cuff facing away from you using 4.50mm hook re-join yarn to

opposite side of the third of the 4ch, 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into next ch, work 8 more dc evenly around thumb hole to end, ss to first dc. Turn. (10dc)


Next Round - Make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end. Turn. Rpt last

round five more times.


Next Round - (dec row) 1ch, dec 1dc over next 2dc, 1dc into each of next 3dc, dec 1dc

over next 2dc, 1dc into each dc to end, ss to first dc. Turn. (8dc)


Next Round - (dec row) 1ch, * dec 1dc over next 2dc, * rpt from * to * to end, ss to first dc. Fasten off leaving a small length of yarn to gather top. (4dc)


Finishing - Gather top of thumb, sew in and tie off loose end of yarn, rpt for top of mitt,

turn mitt through onto RS, fold cuff in half.


Optional

Make a chain length to join one mitt to the other, when wearing thread the mitts through coat sleeves (to help stop losing a mitt)
