RS.        Right Side
dc.        Double Crochet
sc.         Single Crochet
dec.      Leaving the last loop of each dc or sc on hook,
              yo and draw through all 3 loops.

Size to fit: 0-3 months

3.5oz Light Worsted #3 Yarn
H (5.00mm), F (4.00mm) & E (3.50mm) crochet hooks

With H (5.00mm) hook ch70, change to F (4.00mm) hook, 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, * 1sc in each ch to end. Turn. (69sc)

First Row - ch1, sl st in base of ch1, 1dc in next sc, * 1sl st in next sc, 1dc in next sc, * rpt from * to * to end, working a sl st in last sc. Turn.

Second Row – ch1, 1sc in each dc and sl st to end. Turn.

Rpt last 2 rows until 20 rows in all have been worked, finishing on a first row. Fasten Off. Sew up side seam.

Earflaps X 2 With RS facing and working from seam skip 13 stitches, rejoin yarn to 14th stitch with sl st, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in next 7 stitches. Turn. Continue on these stitches for a further 4 rows. Turn.

Dec 1sc (see abbrev above) each end of row on next 3 rows, until 2sc remain. Turn. sl st 2sc together to make a point. Fasten off. Skip 27 stitches and rpt same as for first earflap.

Starting at back seam, and with RS facing, work 2 rows in sc evenly all around helmet including earflaps, working 3sc in points and turning at the end of each row. Fasten off.

Finishing - Sew in and tie off any loose ends, gather top edge by threading yarn through alternate sc’s. With F (4.00mm) hook and using yarn double thickness, ch50 twice for ties. Fasten off.

Tie endings X 2 - With E (3.50mm) hook, ch4, sl st to form a ring, ch1, work 12sc in ring. sl st to first sc, ch1, work 1sc in each sc to end. sl st to first sc. Fasten off leaving a length of yarn to gather in a bobble and attach them to ties.

Make pompom - Cut two circles of card about 2-3” across. Cut a small hole in the centre of each circle and place the circles together, thread yarn round and round the circle, making sure that the yarn is evenly distributed around the centre hole. Continue until the hole is full. Use sharp pointed scissors to snip the yarn between the two card circles, wind yarn around middle of two pieces of card and secure, leave length of yarn to sew with. Remove card and trim the pompom to the required size and attach to Crown on hat.
