Crab stitch. Work dc backwards


3ch counts as first tr


Approx size:  11.5” Wide x 13.5” High

                         23 Inch Circumference


Materials

100 grams of Double Knitting in Main Colour

50 grams of Double Knitting in Contrast Colour

5.00mm & 4.40mm crochet hooks, 1 mtr of 9mm wide gingham ribbon


TENSION - 5dc and 5 rows of dc measures approx 1 Inch Square

Tote Bag - (starting at top and worked downwards) With 5.00mm hook and contrast

colour yarn, make 102ch, ss to first ch to make a ring change to 4.50mm hook, making

sure the ch length does not twist as you go work 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each

ch to end, ss to first dc. Turn. (102dc)


Row 2 - 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end, ss to first dc. Turn. Rpt last

row once.


Row 4 - (Eyelet Holes) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into next dc, * 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc

into each of next 4dc, * rpt from * to * to last dc, work 1dc into last 1dc, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn.


Row 5 - 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each 2ch space and dc to end, ss to first dc

on beginning of row. Turn. (102dc) Rpt Row 2 three more times. Fasten off.


Commence with base Using main colour yarn, rpt Row 2 four more times. Turn.


Pattern Row 1 - Working into back loop of stitch only make 3ch, 1tr into each dc to end,

ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. (101tr + 3ch)


Pattern Row 2 - Working through both loops make 3ch, 1tr into next tr, trb (see abbrev above) into next tr, * 1tr into each of next 2tr, trb into next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn.


Pattern Row 3 - 3ch, trf (see abbrev above) into next tr, * 1tr into each of next 2tr, trf into next tr, * rpt from * to * to last tr, 1tr into last tr, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn.


Pattern Row 4 - 3ch, 1tr into next tr, trb into next tr, * 1tr into each of next 2tr, trb into next

tr, * rpt from * to * to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn.


Pattern Row 5 - Working into back loop of stitch only make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch,

1dc into each tr to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn. (102dc)


Pattern Rows 6-8 - Working through both loops work 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn.


The last eight rows form the pattern, rpt rows until work measures approx 13.5 inches in all from beginning. Turn.


Starting each row with 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch and turning at the end of each row, work

four more rows in dc.


With WS facing, place seam on the side of bag and using 5.00mm hook, slip stitch

bottom of bag together working through both sides of dc's to close open seam, make 1ch.

Fasten off. (51 slip stitches)


Return to cast on edge, with RS facing, using 4.50mm hook and contrast colour yarn, work 1ch, 1dc into each ch to end, ss to first dc. Work row of crab stitch (see abbrev above) into dc's. Fasten off.


Strap - With main colour yarn and 5.00mm hook make 150ch, work 3dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1dc into each ch to last ch, 6dc into last ch, working along opposite side of starting

ch, work 1dc into each ch to last ch, 3dc into last ch, ss to first dc. Turn.


Next Row - 1ch, 2dc into each of next 3dc, 1dc into each of next 147dc, 2dc into each of next 6dc, 1dc into each of next 147dc, 2dc into each of next 3dc, ss to first dc. Turn.

Fasten off.


Next Row - Join in contrast colour yarn, make 1ch, (2dc into next dc, 1dc into next dc),

three times, 1dc into each of next 149dc, (2dc into next dc, 1dc into next dc), five times,

1dc into each of next 149dc, (2dc into next dc, 1dc into next dc) twice, ss to first dc.


Work one row of crab stitch. Fasten off.


Finishing- Sew in and tie off loose ends, thread ribbon through eyelet holes around top of bag and tie in a bow. With RS facing tack strap to each side of the top of the bag with a needle and yarn.
